Fish oil and fenofibrate An Adult AIDS Clinical Trials Group AACTG ; study found that high triglyceride levels were significantly lowered when taking fish oil or fenofibrate alone, and even more of a decrease was seen when both were taken in combination. Following an American Heart Association Scientific Statement on fi sh oil and triglycerides, some researchers decided to look at using the supplement in HIV patients with high triglycerides. Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids. Fricor is one of the brand names for fenofibrate, a drug used to lower levels of cholesterol and triglyceride. The cost of this medication starts around a month, but is available generically for about monthly. The study, ACTG A5186, randomized 100 people with triglyceride levels of 400 and normal LDL the good cholesterol ; to 3 grams of fish oil twice a day, or 160 mg of fenofibrate once a day. At 8 weeks, 4 47 8% ; who took fish oil and 8 48 17% ; on fenofibrate had triglycerides below 200 mg dL. Seventy-five people who were unable to get their triglycerides below 400 then combined the fish oil and fenofibrate, and, using a strict intent-to-treat analysis, 17 23% ; had triglycerides levels below 200 at 18 weeks from the start of the study. The role of genetics There were several studies presented at this year's CROI which looked at how genetics may play a role in body fat changes or blood fat levels in those on HIV treatment, which may someday allow doctors to 22 Proof 4 040706 Positively Aware May June 2006 customize an individual's treatment to fit his or her genetic profile. Maroun, and the Gastrointestinal Cancer Disease Site Group A Quality Initiative of the Program in Evidence-based Care PEBC ; , Cancer Care Ontario CCO ; Developed by the Gastrointestinal Cancer Disease Site Group Original Report Date: December 12, 2005 Current Report Date: May 28, 2008 QUESTION Should adult patients with advanced locally advanced non-resectable or metastatic ; colorectal cancer who are considered candidates for systemic therapy receive bevacizumab Avastin ; combined with cytotoxic chemotherapy? Outcomes of interest were overall survival, progression-free survival, response rates, and adverse effects. TARGET POPULATION These recommendations apply to adult patients with advanced colorectal cancer who are considered candidates for systemic therapy. RECOMMENDATIONS For patients with advanced colorectal cancer receiving fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy as first-line therapy, the addition of bevacizumab is recommended to improve overall survival. The addition of bevacizumab to fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy is also recommended for patients with advanced colorectal cancer receiving second-line therapy if they did not receive bevacizumab as part of their initial treatment. The role of continuing bevacizumab after disease progression on a bevacizumabcontaining regimen is not clear due to the absence of evidence. Therefore, the continuation of bevacizumab in patients who have progressed on this therapy cannot currently be recommended outside of clinical trials. PSORIASIS Although conventional medical practitioners believe that psoriasis has no known cause or cure, Dr. Ingram says that this vexing skin disorder is largely due to fungal infection. The root of the problem may be a malfunction in the intestinal tract due to overconsumption of sugar. He recommends a diet rich in healthy proteins and fats, and oil of oregano taken under the tongue or in juice two to three times daily. Discuss internal use with a medical professional before using. Oil of oregano also can be used topically for psoriasis. WOUNDS According to Dr. Ingram, oil of oregano is a potent treatment for any superficial open wound. Apply oil to the wound and along the edges, and cover. The bottom line? Conventional medical treatments, such as antibiotics, are typically overprescribed and may lead to super-infections. Think outside the box. Bacteria, viruses and fungi are no match for oregano, says Dr. Ingram. Oil of oregano is readily available at your health-food store, or you can purchase it from North American Herb & Spice available from Internatural, 800-643-4221 or internatural ; . Oreganol P73 is the oil in gelcap form. Oregamax -- the dried oregano leaf with garlic and onion powder in capsules -- is a milder formulation. As noted above, talk to a medical professional formally trained in botanical medicine about the appropriateness and dosing level for internal use of oregano. Phenotypic expression of virulence factors in E. coli and antibiogram have been compared in isolates from different patient groups. The present study was therefore undertaken to determine differences if any, in the presence of phenotypically expressed virulence factors like P-fimbriae, type 1 fimbriae and haemolysin among E. coli causing urinary infections in three different groups of patients. Antibiogram was also recorded to determine differences, if any, between the groups. Material & Methods Consecutive E. coli isolates n 163 ; obtained in counts of 105 cfu ml and in pure growth, from routine urine cultures13 of the three groups of patients viz., antenatal and postnatal women, patients presenting to urology department, and patients being seen in the rehabilitation unit, between January and December 2002 in Christian Medical College, Vellore were included in the study. These three groups were selected based on the assumptions that the first group is likely to have community acquired UTI while the second group, because of the underlying urological abnormalities is more likely to have complicated and also hospital acquired UTI. The rehabilitation unit has patients with paralysis and so is likely to have infections associated with long-term use of catheter. Identification of isolates was done using standard microbiological techniques 14 . Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was done on Mueller Hinton agar by disc diffusion method using National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards NCCLS ; guidelines15. Virulence factors studied were haemolysin production, MRHA of human O group 3 per cent erythrocytes in the presence of 2 per cent mannose to indicate P fimbriae, and MSHA of 3 per cent human erythrocytes to indicate type 1 fimbriae6, 16. Haemolysis was defined as clearing of 5 per cent sheep blood agar around or beneath bacterial colonies after over night incubation 12. Other phenotypic characteristics like production of gas, motility and fermentation of lactose were also noted14. Chi square test was used to analyse the data statistically. Epi Info version 5 was used for this analysis and ismo.

It is abundantly clear that the US is spending far too much money on 'defense6' and this is where the bulk of the money is being spent when the government borrows billions of dollars as it signs Mr. And Mrs. America's name to the IOU. If you are rich and well connected, you are making a lot of money. Even Bush's uncle, the former President Bush's brother is making large sums of money on defense contractors. President Bush's uncle made more than 0, 000 last month by selling stock in a defense contractor whose profits are growing because of the Iraq war, records show. - AP All of this money is being made from this looting while troops on the ground are bing bled to death. Listen folks, the Army is having to scavenge parts for its M1 tanks, it is going around the globe to get them because there are no more available. Where is the money? The Army is having trouble getting ammunition. That's right, troops are having to ration it because there is not enough stockpiled and altace.

Reporting requires the development and testing of robust comparative methodology, since financial rewards are based on comparisons. Incentives could be based not only on high performance but also on consistency over time. This may prove especially important for small hospitals where variability is greatest and low patient volume can lead to the exclusion from the top performing groups. Relationship Between Cost and Quality for People with Diabetes in Managed Care Organizations Turbyville Sally, M.A., Sarah Scholle, Dr.Ph., Mark Krushat, Ph.D. Presented By: Sally Turbyville, M.A., Assistant Director, Quality Measuremeant, Quality Measurement, NCQA, 2000 L Street, NW Ste 500, Washington, DC 20036, Phone: 202 ; 9551756, Fax: 202 ; 955-3599, Email: turbyville ncqa Research Objective: This research examines the empirical relationship between cost and quality in providing care for adults with diabetes who are enrolled in commercial managed care organizations across the US. Study Design: Two cross-sectional analyses based on commercial health plan claims encounter data over a 12-month period calendar year 2005 ; were performed. The first analysis focused on results within a PPO delivery structure. The second analysis focused on results within an HMO delivery structure. HMOs were able to supplement the assessment of quality of care rendered with medical record data. Both data sets used for this study are based on summary data derived from health plans' collection and reporting for two HEDIS measures: 1 ; Comprehensive Diabetes Care CDC ; , and 2 ; Relative Resource Use RRU ; for People with Diabetes. The first measure reports on plans' performance in achieving important diabetes care process and outcome objectives. The second measure reports an observed-toexpected standardized cost ratio. Costs are computed using a standardized fee schedule for all plans. The ratio estimates plans' standardized costs compared to the risk adjusted average standardized costs among all plans in the studies in rendering care for adults with diabetes. Standardized health care costs across four service category types are captured: 1 ; inpatient confinements, 2 ; ambulatory pharmacy use, 3 ; procedures or surgeries, and 4 ; office visits and capoten and Buy tricor.
